Time off

I'm having a few days on the isle of Anglesey in North Wales, one of my favourite places. You don't come to Wales in October for the weather, but today has been glorious, cool but bright, with a bracing breeze. Not wanting to waste such a day, we went for a walk at Newborough, a glorious bit of forest with a magnificent beach. There's an iconic little lighthouse at Ynys Llanddwyn, and beautiful views of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula.

As we walked back to the van through the forest, it was hard to imagine things getting any better. But they did.

Anglesey is one of the few places in Britain where native Red Squirrels can be found. In most of the country they have been driven out by the imported American Grey. Red squirrels are shy little fellows, so even if they're around you don't necessarily see them. So I was delighted to have the opportunity to watch two of these delightful creatures going about their business in the pine trees.

It looks as though the first named storm of the season is going to cut short our little break. It's ok -- I've seen red squirrels!
