Playing with another new toy

Yesterday the postman brought me a new toy. I've been tempted by the Lilygo T-Deck Plus for a while. Last week I gave in. It's a gadget with all sorts of capabilities, but my interest is in using it as a portable terminal so that I can access my plain text files on the go.

The first task was to install some ssh firmware. I went with NeoDeck because I thought it looked cool.

That went very smoothly and it worked immediately. I was very excited to open nano on the SDF pubnix! But then - woe! There's no ctrl key on the T-Deck keyboard! Nano is a bit tricky to use without a ctrl key. I spent some time in the search engines without success, so I'm afraid I turned to an AI model for solace. Folk round here are very down on the LLMs, but resolving this would have taken much longer without it.

As it is, I've been able to make a couple of tiny modifications to the firmware so that nano is perfectly usable, if slightly fiddly. The screen is clear and bright, the text very legible. I wouldn't want to write a novel on it, but for short notes and edits to my calendar & todo list, it will get the job done.
