Worth the wait

littlecampsite is dreaming about driving slowly on the B roads in a microcamper:

I know exactly what they mean. My VW is not exactly a microcamper, but it is very at home on Britain's little roads and I'm much happier bimbling down the back routes than thundering down the motorway. There's a wonderful freedom in taking off, stopping when it suits, and having a brew when you need one.

Owning a camper was a childhood dream, and though it took me the best part of half a century to get there, I still feel a great sense of privilege. Part of of me might wish I'd bought it earlier, but the truth is I wasn't in a position to get there any sooner. "Good things come to he who waits" might not *always* be true, but there is value in the waiting. Patience is, after all, a virtue. In an age of instant gratification, the act of waiting is about as counter-cultural as it gets.

Perhaps that is part of the pleasure of the campervan too. It encourages a different pace: slower roads, unhurried stops, no great anxiety about getting there as quickly as possible. Some things are better for not being rushed. Dreams, journeys, cups of tea by the roadside.

And perhaps life itself.
